One person is dead following a two-vehicle collision on Highway 22, approximately two kilometres south of Cochrane.

At roughly 1:15 p.m., Feb. 13, Cochrane RCMP, EMS and Rocky View County fire crews responded to a car crash south of James Walker Trail.

According to police, a southbound pickup truck crossed into the pathway of a north-travelling cement truck.

The driver and lone occupant of the Ford Ranger, an 84-year-old man from Bragg Creek, was pronounced dead at the scene.

RCMP said road conditions were a factor in the fatal collision. Powerful winds and blowing snow made for a slick section of highway.

“There were multiple witnesses reporting that the (pickup) truck hit a patch of snow, lost control and veered into the other lane,” said Cpl. Troy Savinkoff.

The driver of the concrete truck was assessed at the scene by EMS and released.

Investigators shut down the stretch of Highway 22 for about four hours.

The identity of the deceased was not released.
