What’s more enduring than the bronze sculptures they create is the legacy they are leaving behind.
Local artists Don and Shirley Begg were honoured with the 2024 Order of Cochrane, one of the community’s most prestigious awards, during the regular council meeting on April 28.
“Don and Shirley have elevated Cochrane’s reputation on the national and international stage through their extraordinary work,” said Mayor Jeff Genung. “Their impact on the cultural identity of Cochrane is profound, and we are proud to honour their legacy with the 2024 Order of Cochrane.”
The couple are the founders and owners of Studio West Ltd., which was established in 1970. Their works have gained global acclaim — exported to South America, Europe and the United States. Locally, their bronze sculptures include notable installations such as the bull rider outside Studio West and the soldier monument at the Cochrane Legion cenotaph.
“It is an honour to be picked for the Order of Cochrane,” said Don Begg. “We’ve taken pride in being here at Studio West for 55 years, and we have no intention of moving.”
“Cochrane’s our town, and we proudly put ‘Made in Cochrane’ on every sculpture, monument, or statue that leaves our foundry,” added Shirley Begg. “We’re very, very pleased to be here.”
In addition to their artistic achievements, the couple have made significant contributions to local community life, including helping establish Cochrane’s first early childhood education classes and founding the town’s first figure skating club.
The recognition comes after Don Begg was named to the Alberta Order of Excellence in 2024 — the province’s highest civilian honour.
The Order of Cochrane is awarded to individuals whose legacy demonstrates commitment, vision, and leadership in the development of the community. Nominations are submitted online by members of the public, with Council selecting recipients through a secret ballot.
