Bill Hill Springs mistakenly labeled as "State Park" on Google

Numerous provincial parks around the country were found to have the erroneous label.

Canadians took to social media over the weekend, wondering why Google Maps referred to some provincial parks as "state" parks - including Rocky View's own Big Hill Springs.

The concern comes at a time of heightened tension between Canada and the United States.

Google noted that it hasn't made any recent changes to the way it labels parks in Canada, and it is "actively working" to update the labels to "avoid confusion."

The company says it has many labels for parks, and because state and provincial parks are similar, the ‘state park’ label has always been the default setting. Because of the setting, the errors have likely existed for years.

In Saskatchewan, Candle Lake Provincial Park, Rowan’s Ravine Provincial Park, and Pike Lake Provincial Park were listed as state parks.

B.C. saw Shuswap Lake Provincial Park, Mount Robson Park, Whaleboat Island Marine Provincial Park, and Pinecone Burke Provincial Park falsely get the "State Park" label.

Alberta, meanwhile, had Rocky View County's Big Hill Springs Provincial Park listed as "Big Hill Springs State Park," which is just 10 kilometres north of Cochrane.

As of Tuesday, Feb. 25, all Google map searches are coming up "Provincial."

Trump has repeatedly asserted in recent months that Canada should become the 51st state.

On Jan. 20, Trump signed an executive order called “Restoring names that honor American greatness,” which renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.”

This change only applied to U.S. Google Maps users, with both names listed for users outside the U.S.
