The Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre (SLSFSC) has kicked off 2015 with a makeover in its newly-acquired fitness area.
On Jan. 5 the fitness centre opened its doors to the public with $100,000 in new cardio equipment and a fresh new look.
“It has a brand new look and feel,” said Robin Mitchell, general manager and executive director of the SLSFSC. “We have had a huge amount of response ever since we opened the doors. It has been packed with people coming in to take a look and join the fitness centre.”
Mitchell explained that in 2014 the lease with Lifestyle Fitness and Wellness Centre ended. He said that the board of directors had let them know ahead of time that they had been discussing taking over the area.
Previously, people would have to purchase two memberships, one for the SLSFSC, which allowed people to access certain services, and then they would also purchase a separate fitness membership for the Lifestyles Fitness and Wellness Centre.
By having one all-inclusive membership, Mitchell said it made it easier and more affordable for people to join.
“We needed to have an affordable type of membership set up and in place now to meet those growing needs of the populace that are coming into Cochrane,” he said.
Mitchell added that as they build the aquatics facility on to the centre, they are focusing on being that ‘one-stop-shop where everybody wants to go in Cochrane.’
He also added that the Spray Lake Sawmills Recreation Park Society entered into an agreement with the owners of Lifestyle Fitness and Wellness Centre to purchase the equipment they had.
Now the amount of equipment they have has doubled with the newly-purchased cardio equipment, which includes new treadmills, ellipticals, rowers and spin bikes, and the equipment from Lifestyle Fitness that has been put on the mezzanine track.
“Having double the amount of cardio equipment, both out on the track and in the fitness centre, has made a world of difference for people to be able to access equipment,” he said.
Mitchell said that there are two main memberships that people can purchase, the monthly continuous and the annual.
The monthly continuous automatically deducts an amount from the member’s bank account each month and can be cancelled with one month’s written notice. It is $50 per month for an adult, $90 for a family and for a senior or student it is $25.
The annual membership is paid in full and is $500 for an adult, $900 for a family and $250 for a student or senior.
There are also monthly passes and drop-in rates with no long-term obligations.
Mitchell said they define a family as anyone living in the same household with the same address, so up to two adults and unlimited number of children. The monthly continuous and annual membership both come with up to two hours of free child minding.
With the memberships, people have access to the fitness centre, the track, group fitness classes, all drop in activities and the family membership includes access to the bouncers on the weekend and summertime.
