A new musical competition is coming to Cochrane in June, and promises young local musicians a chance to win big cash prizes.
Cochrane Drum Tutor is inviting young musicians to compete in a new talent competition on Sunday, June 22, at the Cochrane Lions Club. The competition is open to all musical performers, solo artists to full bands, 18 years old and under, that perform anything from Opera to Doom Rock.
The format for the competition will be similar in format to those seen on TV. A panel of three industry professionals will act as judges, offering feedback to each performer, and then picking the three prizewinners at the end.
The first place winner will receive $250, with the runner-up getting $100, and third place taking home $50.
Cochrane Drum Tutor says the MC for the event will be Jacklyn Sparrow, the highly experienced band leader and musical theatre performer who will also perform a couple of numbers to kick off the event.
“Talking to lots of young local musicians, it was clear they were just itching for opportunities to get up there, perform, get some publicity and make contacts,” said Edward Allen, the owner of Cochrane Drum Tutor in a competition press release. “The Talent Competition felt like a perfect way to give them that opportunity in a fun entertaining way right here in town.”
The talent competition, which will begin at 1:30 pm, will be just one of three events being put on by Cochrane Drum Tutor on June 22. At 4:00 pm drum students will perform a recital of songs by the Best Band of the Bow Valley 2023 and 2024 award winners The Treblemakers. At 7:30 pm, all local musicians of any age can jump onstage for an “Open Jam” session.
The competition is free to watch, but spots for competitors are limited, so any local talent interested in performing should sign up at the Cochrane Drum Tutor website as soon as they can.
