First, these aren't standardized assessments. They're screeners used to identify children at-risk for learning concerns in reading and math. Even if kinder isn't mandatory in Alberta, they're tools for teachers to use to report to the division, so the division can put supports in place. As we can see, Rocky View just collects, collects, collects, and does nothing with the data. That's why they have 80% or more kids not reading at grade level. If you do your research, you'll see that it takes just 30 minutes per day for less than 12 weeks to help a kindergarten aged child close any gaps. If you use the "wait and see" approach by the time you get to fourth grade it takes a child 90 minutes per day (outside of classroom instruction) for at least 26 weeks ...

1. Teachers are forced to use this "tool" that has zero reliability.
2. Teachers are forced to make recommendations based on this tool, so how do you recommend teachers communicate to parents if 2 out of 3 times it misdiagnoses a child?
3. If Rocky View Schools has banned teachers from telling parents if their child is not meeting expectations, how do you recommend this conversation takes place?
Rocky View Schools needs to be held accountable for the inefficient, ineffective programs they are choosing especially when they cause more harm than good to our children. There are school divisions that've been sued in Ontario over this and the parents won. Who do you think pays for that? Us. The taxpayer.
