The Town of Cochrane’s latest budget communication for 2026 is more than an update. It’s a signal – one that suggests something fundamental is missing in our local leadership: decisiveness.
Last year, an external consultant was hired to conduct a professional citizen survey for the 2025 budget. That process was costly, thorough, and delivered clear results. And yet, just a year later, the Town is once again asking the same questions.
This is not a sign of citizen engagement. It’s a sign of leadership avoidance.
Of course, involving residents is a vital part of good governance. But consultation must not be used as a substitute for responsibility. Those who seek public office must also be willing to make decisions – and stand by them. Especially in challenging times, Cochrane doesn’t need more surveys. It needs direction, strength, and courage.
I urge Mayor Genung and Council to fulfill their mandate with the clarity and conviction their roles demand. Leadership is not the art of never offending anyone – it is the discipline of standing for something, even when it’s hard. It’s time to lead again.
