Editorial: Our federal parties-- never failing to disappoint

Canadians want to believe, but it's pretty darn hard when all three main federal parties give them nothing to believe in.

The “X Files” movie from 2008 was titled “I want to believe.” Canadians too want to believe– not in aliens, monsters and the paranormal– but in the fact that just one of our federal political parties will be able to take the reins on Canada and lead us past this difficult moment provided to us via Trump’s 51st state designs and his ill-thought out tariffs.

However, all of the three main parties on the stump this past week didn’t fail to disappoint.

Carney’s digs at Premier Danielle Smith in Victoria April 6, and his making light of Alberta’s aspirations to have energy export markets opened to us east and west through pipelines not dependent on the U.S. Instead of showing any understanding of Alberta’s needs in his comments, he chose to play stand up comedian to an easy audience in B.C. by stating: “We’re sending Doug Ford on to Fox News, to show them we’re not messing around up here. And we’re going to send Danielle next, we’re -- well maybe we won’t send Danielle. That was a bad idea.”

Save the jokes for Trump, Carney. See if you can make him laugh.

Poilievre, on the other hand, decided he knows what is best for Canada, and could it be coal mining in Alberta?

Pierre Poilievre told media reps on April 7 that if Conservative government would rapidly review and approve 10 resource projects, including the second phase of a natural gas liquefaction project in northern B.C. and “several new mine constructions.”

We already know the Alberta government dances to the tune of Trump buddy Gina Rinehart, but Albertans are likely not too comfortable with the idea of a federal government sucking up to her too. Wrong-note Pierre at it again.

What was his initial response to Trump’s threats to Canadian sovereignty again? Largely agree with Trump’s assessment of Canada as a failed country, and let’s give tax cuts to millionaires.

And the NDP and Jagmeet Singh? What can be said about them? Probably the less the better at this point.
