The Cochrane Rangers Soccer Club is taking aim at a world record for playing soccer.
Soccer Quest 42 will see 16 players play 5-on-5 indoor soccer for 42 hours or more to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest 5-a-side soccer match.
The dual goal of the Thanksgiving weekend event is to break the record and raise $25,000 for western African children through Right To Play, a charity dedicated to ensuring Third World kids have access to sports. Teams will consist of members of the Cochrane Rangers and co-organizer, “Marathon Martin” Parnell.
“In October last year I met Lucy Lovelock, director-at-large of Cochrane Rangers. We chatted about the Guinness world record I had completed in netball and the one I had coming up in lacrosse. I mentioned that I would love to do a soccer GWR and Lucy said let’s make it happen,” said Parnell.
The Rangers and Parnell will form two teams of eight each, who must remain court-side for the duration of the 42-hour record attempt.
And Cochranite John Clubb is also getting involved.
As a provincial-program soccer coach, Clubb is hosting the Alberta Soccer Showcase.
Clubb is currently developing the Soccability Program aimed at offering players with disabilities an opportunity to play together under one banner.
The Alberta Soccer Showcase will run all day Oct. 6 at Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre with development events for coaches and kids, as well as a power-chair soccer demonstration and a game for disabled players.
Soccer Quest 42 starts 6 p.m. Oct. 5 and runs to noon Oct. 7 at SLSFSC.
