Local athlete Oliver Johnson is looking for assistance from the community to, as he joins Team Canada for the World Lifesaving Championships 2024.

This year’s championships will take place on the Gold Coast in Australia from Aug. 20 to Sept. 8. This year, 5,000 from 80 countries will be heading to the event to compete.

Following an announcement on May 6, Johnson was selected to be part of Team Canada’s Youth Male Team. He will be competing alongside 30 of the best lifesaving sport athletes from Canada, and will also be the youngest athlete on the team.

With the championship taking place across the Pacific, Johnson is looking to raise money to help alleviate the financial impact of competing at this year’s event.

“The fundraiser Is to help offset the cost, because it was $5,000 to register to go to Australia” Johnson explained.

With the competition starts on the Aug. 22, Johnson said he plans to arrive earlier to better adjust prior to the actual event. He expects the entire experience to be something he can learn from.

“What I’m looking forward to most is actually meeting people from other countries, and experiencing international competition,” Johnson said. “This is my first international competition.”
