The Cochrane Lions have yet to be caught in their run through the Calgary Bantam Football Association jungle.
The Lions scratched out their fifth-straight win of the season with a 32-14 win over the Calgary Hilltoppers Sept. 22 at Calgary’s Shouldice Park. And they came from behind to do it.
“Our mistakes are killing us,” head coach Jeff Avery warned his players at the mid-game break. “Every mistake is on us. It has to stop.”
Down 14-8 at the half, the Lions put their mistakes behind them and Eric Shatosky recovered an onside kick to open the third quarter.
Quarterback Des Catellier then connected with receiver Eric Nusl for a 40-yard touchdown. Catellier would hit Nusl again for a 10-yard score before finding Evan Perrault with another ten-yard TD strike.
The Lions were a different team in the second half.
“It was pretty different,” Nusl commented on the team’s inconsistent game. “We stopped making mental mistakes and we started playing real football.”
It was the second game of the week for the Lions, who won a Wednesday-nighter 57-22 over Calgary Mavericks Black.
“We have played a lot of football,” said Lions head coach Jeff Avery after the game. “We’ve played Saturday, Wednesday, Saturday. “We’ve got a lot of lumps and bumps on this team. It was a lot of football thrown at these guys. And they pulled through. I’m super proud of them.”
The Lions (5-0) play Cowboys Navy (5-0) 1 p.m., Sept. 29 at Hellard Field, Shouldice Park, Calgary.
Cochrane Lions Atom Football remain undefeated after week three.
• The Atom Lions outplayed the Cowboys 3 touchdowns to 2 and added two interceptions in a convincing team win Sept. 23 at Shouldice Park.
