Camp Horizon hockey fundraiser this weekend

Charity hockey game featuring former NHL stars on Feb. 8 to benefit Easter Seals’ Camp Horizon near Bragg Creek.

Outdoor charity hockey is set to warm up Diamond Valley this weekend.

The puck drops on the second annual Hockey for Horizon charity hockey game on Feb. 8 at the Scott Seaman Sports Rink in Diamond Valley hosted by Foothills MP John Barlow with all money raised going towards Easter Seals’ Camp Horizon.

“I had an opportunity to tour Camp Horizon numerous times and once you see the excited faces of kids at camp, you are compelled to help in any way you can. It truly is a magical place where children with disabilities can be themselves – to be ‘Joe’ instead of ‘the guy in the wheelchair,’” said Barlow, in a release. “Organizing this hockey game is a fun way to bring awareness of Camp Horizon to the community and provide an opportunity for people to help Easter Seals Alberta do their great work.”

Camp Horizon, near Bragg Creek, is described by Easter Seals as a fully accessible and inclusive camp that offers life-changing outdoor experiences for people with disabilities and medical conditions of all ages.

Last year, the camp welcomed over 420 campers and partnered with nine other non-profit organizations to provide a specialized experience for participants.

The charity game is seeking to fundraise $50,000 to subsidize the cost for 25 people to experience Camp Horizon.

National Hockey League legends Craig Levie, Colin Patterson and Rich Preston are returning to the game along with Calgary Flames alumni Paul Kruse and four-time Stanley Cup champion Duane Sutter. Country singer George Canyon will be performing the national anthem ahead of puck drop.

Following the game, which runs from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., an after party will be held at Hard Knox Brewery in Diamond Valley from 6 to 10 p.m. featuring a hot stove discussion with the NHL and Flames legends in attendance.
