The Cochrane community of Greystone celebrated another milestone on Sunday following a groundbreaking ceremony for an upcoming commercial centre in Greystone Place.

Greystone developer and CEO of Ocgrow Group, Harish Consul, outlined that the new commercial area will offer unique and premier opportunities for Cochrane. With town leaders in attendance for the event, Consul said he is happy to see continued support from the community.

“We had amazing support and we are grateful for everyone who’s come out here,” Consul said. “We are building the trendiest part of Cochrane here at Greystone Place. It’ll be a total of eight buildings, with a flagship building on the waterfront.”

With a few new businesses already slated to move in to the future space, including a new childcare centre and a new dental practice, Consul said interest is growing very quickly.

“Calgary is the fastest growing city right now, and Cochrane is the number one growth municipality in Canada right now,” Consul said. “So, to bring this here after years of hard work, it feels absolutely amazing.”

Mayor Jeff Genung, who attended the ceremony and shared a few words about the development, said it is exciting to see Greystone Place come to fruition after many years of planning and discussions.

“This is a special neighbourhood,” Genung said. “Council and administration really felt that we had something special with this land. We didn’t just want to ‘sell the farm,’ we really wanted to hold back and make sure we had a good balance of commercial and residential, and I think that’s starting to prove itself.”

Looking to the future, Genung said Greystone itself will be something that Cochrane will need to model and build off of.

“The return on the investment that Cochrane as a community has made is going to pay off in spades here,” Genung said. “I think that’s the plan going forward – that the growth that we’re getting is the growth that we need, and it’s also paying for itself while providing a better quality of life for residents that live here right now.”
