Ironman 70.3 Calgary, one of the most scenic and challenging of the 70.3 series, is set to run on schedule July 28, but with a brand new route.
In lieu of the Ghost Lake swim start, triathletes will start the 1.9-kilometre swim course from the beach at the south side of Calgary’s McKenzie Lake. Participants will make one loop of the lake before hopping out of the water to begin the nearly 90-kilometre bike ride.
According to the event website, “the bike course is point to point with no out and back, so it’s impossible for us to have the course at exactly 90 kilometres…. While we’re sorry for the decreased different route, the challenging nature and scenery alone more than makes up for it.”
The rerouted bike track will travel from McKenzie Lake Way to westbound Highway 22X, through Bragg Creek to Highway 8. From there, athletes will head back towards the city, finishing in Calgary’s North Glenmore Park.
And then comes the 21.1-kilometre run, from North Glenmore Park, through Weaselhead Natural Environment Area, into South Glenmore Park and back. Awards will be handed out in North Glenmore Park following the race.
The park will also be the location of the race expo, which will run on race day.
Ironman 70.3 Calgary participants can pick up their race package at SpeedTheory July 26.
