Due to the anticipation of hot weather conditions and the current condition of dry cured grasses, the Town of Cochrane has issued a fire ban, effective at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 24, 2024.

Cochrane fire chief Shawn Polley said that the Cochrane fire services team is working diligently to educate the public about the recent restrictions.

“We put the fire ban on yesterday, so we're providing community education opportunities around that,” said Polley.

The current fire restrictions indicate an extreme fire danger level, banning all of the following activities: open fire pits, town fire pits, backyard fire pits, outdoor fireplaces, chimneys, for ovens, and indoor wood-burning fireplaces.

“They can head over to the town of Cochrane website for additional information,” said Polley, “Also if you're heading out to go camping, it might be best to look at albertafirebans.ca and you'll see where all the fire bands are in the provinces and in the parks and protected areas.”

Polley also informed The Eagle that as of right now, Cochrane fire services have not been sent to Jasper or Big Horn to fight current wildfires, but have offered their services where needed.
