Time sure flies when you’re Cochrane Lions Rodeo Royalty.
Already midway through their 2013 tenure, Queen Lexie Courtney and Princess Dalyce Gagnon said they still haven’t gotten used to the job.
“It’s been such a great opportunity,” said Courtney. “It’s meant a lot that I get to represent my town.”
“And it’s not just about Cochrane, but the Lions organization too,” added Gagnon.
The two have become fast friends since being named the 2013 Cochrane Lions Rodeo Royals in September, working alongside each other for a variety of appearances. Now, the duo is gearing up for rodeo season, which both ladies said they are excited about.
“Of course (Cochrane’s) rodeo will be a blast, but I’m really looking forward to the Calgary Stampede,” said Courtney, adding that she and Gagnon will be part of the parade and festivities. “I watch it each year on TV, so it’ll be eye-opening to be a part of it — such a great life experience. We’ll have the opportunity to meet so many people.”
Networking aside, the queen and princess said they are most impressed with their own personal growth since beginning the royalty selection process.
“We get comments all the time (about how we’re doing as representatives), so we can see how much we’ve improved,” said Gagnon. “I’ve grown a lot as a person, I’m much more comfortable with the job now.”
For Gagnon, the opportunity has given her a chance to improve on her public speaking skills. For Courtney, she said being queen has helped boost her confidence and encouraged her to be more outgoing.
“It’s a different skill set that you need with an opportunity like this,” said Courtney. “It’s been a handy set to have.”
Both women admitted they have had to find a balance between being themselves and being royalty.
“I’ve learned I don’t have to be ‘on’ all the time,” laughed Gagnon.
When they aren’t wearing their crowns, the two stay busy. Courtney, 23, is in her graduating year of a communications degree from Mount Royal University. Gagnon, 19, is a welder and a competitive dressage rider.
Before rodeo season begins the pair are slated for a string of public appearances — including the Calgary Outdoor Show — and have already begun promoting the 2014 Cochrane Lions Rodeo Royalty Queen and Princess Pageant.
