Bragg Creek Performing Arts is offering a concert to help kick off Indigenous History Month this June with Wendy Walker, Métis and Mi’kmaq First Nations singer-songwriter.
The local arts group said Walker’s grassroots musical style and powerhouse vocals combine for “an unforgettable experience.”
Indigenous History Month is a time to reflect on the history, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. Music, song, and storytelling are central to Indigenous cultures. They carry the word and spirit of ancestors across time, and teachings important for all people.
Wendy Walker’s journey in music began at a young age, with her first performance at just eight years old. Since then, she has shared her talent across venues that include jails, churches, and international events like the Olympics.
Born in Manitoba, Walker has lived in Calgary for a number of years. When she was eight and visiting her father in Vancouver she was asked to perform “You Are My Sunshine.” It may have been her first performance.
As a young singer, she performed all over the place before taking a lengthy break from music. Nearly 30 years ago, she picked it up again, touring Canada and the U.S.
In 2018, she was among the artists asked to participate in an Alberta delegation at the Olympics in Pyeongchang, Korea, where she performed as part of an a capella duo called Reconciliation.
Walker has released dozens of singles and two full-length albums and has a third in development. She continues to inspire audiences with her great vocals and heartfelt lyrics.
Tickets for what organizers are calling, “a journey through culture, rhythm, and soul” at the Bragg Creek Snowbirds Chalet are available through bcpa.ca or Ticketpro (1-888-655-9090). General admission $35, youth under 18, $25.
The concert starts at 8 pm, doors open at 7pm on Saturday June 8.
