St. Timothy students left the inaugural Be Brave Calgary Hitmen game feeling “inspired” and “overwhelmed.”

In lieu of Pink Shirt Day, typically hosted at schools across North America inviting students to wear pink shirts to raise awareness for anti-bullying, junior high students from St. Timothy School attended the “Be Brave” Hitmen game last Wednesday.

“It was a really good experience, since we went together as a whole school I think it bonded us and made us stronger,” said Natasha Le, 14-year-old St. Timothy student.

“It was really overwhelming how everyone wore their pink T-shirts – it was a happy moment.”

Students from across the province were invited for an afternoon of wearing pink “Be Brave” shirts, watching hockey, and learning about acceptance by participating in fun and interactive experiences.

The Calgary Hitmen’s message to youth was to “Be Brave” against bullying.

“It was an incredible opportunity for different schools to come together and raise awareness about bullying … it was very inspirational,” said Theo Blugh, 14-year-old student from St. Timothy.

Vice-principal Rob Brabec said he thought the event went really well and was happy the kids “loved it.”

“The place was pretty packed,” Brabec said.

“It was different because we got a chance to get the kids out. It was a good community event that brought everyone together and it was super fun.”

While both Le and Blugh agreed they didn’t think there was a bullying problem at the local Catholic high school, the students said they realized the importance of bullying prevention.

“It is important to raise awareness so it can be stopped before it escalates,” Blugh said.
