As a key element in the future trail that will connect Cochrane to Calgary, The City of Calgary is inviting members of the community to the grand opening of the Haskayne Legacy Park for a morning filled with festivities and celebration on Sept. 16.
From 10 a.m. to noon, everyone of all ages is invited to the outdoor event that will be completely free, and will mark the opening of Calgary’s newest 126-hectare regional park.
To kick off the day, the ceremony with an Elder Prayer, followed by speeches by Dick and Lois Haskayne, Mayor Jyoti Gondek, The City of Calgary, and the Glenbow Ranch Park Foundation.
Following the opening, guests can enjoy a free pancake breakfast with live music, wagon rides, golf cart tours, indigenous educational activities, and many other activities on event day.
Together with Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park, Haskayne Legacy Park will play a major role in connecting both parks to the Trans-Canada Trail, which will connect Calgary and Cochrane via a regional trail dubbed for now as - The Trail.
Funding and resources for the trail are still undergoing, with no definite timeline for the trail’s completion.
A majority of the property was purchased under the ENMAX park program which provided 360 acres. The final purchase was made possible by the donations of Dick and Lois Haskayne, who personally donate over $5 million in land toward the park.
The Haskayne’s also provided matching funds towards the new pavilion building in the park, which is also the first net-zero energy building in Calgary’s building portfolio.
