The theatre at the Cochrane RancheHouse will be transformed into Africa’s Pride Lands for a three-day run of The Lion King, a musical put on by a performing arts troupe at Bow Valley High School (BVHS).

The musical is slated to run March 21-23, starting at 7 p.m.

“It’s a family show that has been adapted straight from the Disney movie,” said Jodi Hogan, BVHS performing arts teacher and director of the show. “Audiences can expect to see the familiar characters and hear all their favourite songs.”

The cast will feature 20 BVHS students, an elaborate set and costumes of intricate, handcrafted masks, created and airbrushed by art teacher Marsha Williams-Day.

Unlike the big, handheld masks from last year’s performance of The Jungle Book, these masks are plastic, molded to the performers heads and held on with skin adhesive.

“Everyone is working so hard to get the costumes and musical perfect,” said Becki Masterman, a Grade 12 student at BVHS. “In the end, it’s going to all come together to be great.”

Masterman said she has been involved in the performing arts class since her freshman year at the high school. For The Lion King, she’ll be taking on the role of Nala, a lioness and childhood friend of the lead character, Simba.

The Lion King is the tale of Simba, a young lion and future king of the Pride Lands. When the death of his father is blamed on him, Simba runs away. Eventually, he finds his way back to fight for the land that is rightfully his. He’s helped along the way by Rafiki the primate, Timon the meerkat, Pumbaa the warthog and, of course, Nala.

Tickets for the event are $10 and can be purchased at the door or at Pet Planet.
