Town of Cochrane Coun. Susan Flowers floated a trial balloon at a Committee of the Whole meeting Monday evening when she suggested that perhaps it’s time to shed the “town” label and start calling it The City of Cochrane.
“I keep hearing about us being the fastest growing. People still think we’re a town – maybe at some point we need to start calling ourselves the City of Cochrane. We are a city, we’re a mid-sized city, and maybe we’d be more respected for that if we called ourselves a city. Just a thought.”
Flowers’ comments came at the tail end of a presentation from Town administration bringing council up to speed on the overall advocacy efforts being made on Cochrane’s behalf with other levels of government.
To be classed as a city in Alberta, communities must have a population of at least 10,000 people, with a majority of their buildings on parcels of land smaller than 1,850 m².
They then would need to apply to Alberta Municipal Affairs for city status under the authority of the Municipal Government Act.
The current population of Cochrane is 35,850.
