Council appoints members as representatives in housing and policing boards effective April 14

A couple of members for certain boards were appointed during Cochrane Council's regular meeting on April 14.

Council has appointed Coun. Susan Flowers as the second non-voting representative to the Cochrane Society for Housing Options (CSHO) board.

CSHO, which plays a key role in supporting affordable housing in the community, sought to strengthen its partnership with the Town of Cochrane by involving council members as non-voting board representatives.

The appointment further develops the long-standing relationship between the Town and CSHO, providing council with increased clarity and oversight on the organization’s work.

Coun. Marni Fedeyko was previously appointed as the first non-voting representative on Feb. 24, with Flowers serving as her alternate. At the April 14 regular council meeting, CSHO formally requested that the alternate position be elevated to a second non-voting seat.

“I am excited to be a part of it,” said Flowers. “Coun. Fedeyko and I did attend their meetings, and there’s a lot going on. I would love to be part of the solutions.”

Flowers’ appointment is effective from April 14, 2024, to Oct. 20, 2025.

A procedural bylaw amendment will be brought forward in the future to designate CSHO as a “Schedule C” external partner. This change would ensure the annual appointment of council representatives at inaugural and organizational council meetings, creating more consistent representation on the board.

Meanwhile, in a closed session, council also appointed six new public-at-large members to the Cochrane Municipal Policing Committee from a pool of 38 applicants.

The following individuals were appointed for terms effective April 14, 2024, to April 14, 2028:

  • Sid Roy
  • Thomas Chapman
  • Zachary Cristea
  • Marlys Jackson
  • Gary Carty
  • Cheryl Whittal

Committee terms are a maximum of three years and are staggered to maintain continuity and facilitate knowledge transfer.

Coun. Alex Reed was also appointed to the committee as a council representative, with a term from April 14, 2024, to Oct. 20, 2025.
