The Cochrane Ringette Association is inviting local youth to the free Come Try Ringette event on Sunday, April 27, aiming to introduce more players to the sport and grow its presence in the community.

“We try to host it annually,” said parent volunteer Krista Town. “My daughter attended last year, and that’s how she got hooked.”

Like hockey, ringette is a fast-paced ice sport where teams score on an opposing goal. However, it is non-contact and uses a rubber ring controlled with straight end sticks instead of a puck and bladed sticks.

“The sport encourages teamwork and discipline,” Town said. “It’s super fun to watch all the players execute their strategies and encourage participation from every team member.”

She added that ringette emphasizes skill development, as players must pass the ring over the blue line, and body checking is not allowed.

Come Try Ringette will feature coaches and players from the Cochrane Ringette Association, who will teach the basics and give attendees a firsthand experience of the game.

“It’s not overly structured,” Town said. “We’ll cater to whatever the skill level is of the group on the ice. It’s all about learning the game, trying some drills, and having fun.”

In addition to Come Try Ringette, the association also offers Bust the Dust, another free skate event held just before the fall season for potential new players.

The Cochrane Ringette Association has teams in the U10, U12, U14, U16, and U19 age groups, along with Active Start, an introductory program for players aged four to six.

Come Try Ringette will take place at Spray Lakes Arena Totem 3 on April 27 from 2:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.
