COCHRANE— Cochrane RCMP assisted in the apprehension of an erratic driver who made their way from Calgary to Mitford Park in a stolen vehicle during a police chase on Sunday (Jan. 3) afternoon.
The stolen vehicle came out of Calgary and Cochrane RCMP assisted Calgary Police Service in apprehending the driver, said Cpl. Troy Savinkoff. One person was taken into custody at the scene.
“We had received information about an erratic driving vehicle that was coming toward Cochrane on Highway 22,” Savinkoff said. “Attempts had already been made to stop the vehicle by police in Calgary and so the decision was made to rather than try and engage the vehicle to spike belt it.”
A pursuit was initiated when the vehicle came into Cochrane, but given the dangerous nature of the driving, the decision was made to box the vehicle in.
The spike belt deployed by Cochrane RCMP was successful and the vehicle was contained in the ditch by the intersection of Highway 22 and West Rock Road.
He noted the erratic vehicle made contact with one of the RCMP vehicles and a civilian vehicle suffered minor damage.
“Those are such dangerous things and we really dislike doing it, especially a vehicle that is coming toward Cochrane. But in the end, the driving in this particular case, the driving was extremely dangerous prior to us even being involved so that's why the decision was made to spike belt it to try and mitigate the risk as much as we could,” Savinkoff said. “We’re very thankful no-one was hurt in the incident.”
Cochrane RCMP stopped and contained the vehicle, and the driver and vehicle were then transferred to the Calgary Police Service because the initial incident occurred in Calgary.
The lone driver was arrested and firearms and drugs were seized from the vehicle, Savinkoff said.
Calgary Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
