It’s a small world after all, at Cochrane’s first ‘tiny’ bed and breakfast.
Owner/operator Jackie Skrypnek said she is “super excited” and a “little nervous” to finally open the ‘little’ Hereabouts B&B in January, located in the East end of Cochrane.
“It is a little bit charming and a little bit funky, mixed with creative uses,” Skrypnek said. “It’s surreal it is finally ready to go.”
The holistic nutrition consultant turned bed and breakfast owner said it was about a year ago when she was inspired to turn her idea into reality.
“I had taken an extend permaculture course and wanted to challenge trying to bring aspects of how I want to live and how to earn a living in a way that falls in line with my values,” Skrypnek explained.
The 247-square-foot home started construction in late June and finished in September. Built by Skrypnek and her husband, who is a carpenter, the tiny house incorporates a variety of repurposed materials within the home including a cabinet completely rebuilt from old doors.
Located in the Skrypnek’s backyard, the accommodations can house two adults in the queen-sized bed and up to two children in the loft adjacent.
“It is exciting in terms of taking an idea and making it happen … it is sort of rolling a bunch of goals into one,” Skrypnek said.
Guests will have a choice of a couple different breakfast items, made with mostly local ingredients, including food from the Skrypnek’s garden beside the tiny home – aligning with Skrypnek’s sustainable goals.
The tiny bed and breakfast was also able to be built more spacious as the home is not mobile, with an interior kitchenette that has a hotplate and a fully functional bathroom with a shower.
“This is a great opportunity for people to try what a tiny house would feel like,” Skrypnek said.
Despite other tiny-home owners having issues with permits in Rocky View County, including Gregg Taylor who was given noticed to move his tiny 160-square-foot home from the five-acre parcel of land he rents in Springbank, as previously reported by the Eagle – Skrypnek said she “didn’t run into many problems” in Cochrane.
“There were more fees and permits than I expected but it was all pretty straight forward,” Skrypnek said.
The tiny bed and breakfast is listed under the development permit as a bed and breakfast accommodation “with tiny house” and will be opening the doors Jan. 1.
“It is a little urban getaway, when people visit Cochrane it is ideal,” Skrypnek said.
The bed and breakfast owners will be hosting an open house to the public this Dec. 4 from 1 to 3 p.m. at 127 Baird Ave. For more information contact Jackie Skrypnek by email at [email protected] and stay tuned for the website, to be up and running by next week at hereaboutsbnb.com.
