Cochrane Food Bank Society hosts annual food drive

Cochrane’s local food bank is calling on residents to rally together for its annual food drive happening Saturday, April 26.

Cochrane’s local food bank is calling on residents to rally together for its annual food drive happening Saturday, April 26.

From 10 a.m. to noon, volunteers with the Cochrane Food Bank Society will be canvassing neighbourhoods across west Cochrane, collecting donations to support individuals and families facing food insecurity.

Residents are encouraged to leave their donations at the front door during collection in the following communities:

  • Bow Meadows
  • Bow Ridge
  • Cochrane Lakes
  • Crawford Ranch
  • Fireside
  • Harmony
  • Heartland
  • Heritage Hills
  • Jumping Pound
  • Monterra
  • West Pointe
  • West Terrace
  • West Valley

This year, the food bank is making a shift from its usual four annual drives to just two — one covering the west side of Cochrane this weekend, and the other scheduled for September 20 on the east side.

“This change is intended to preserve the commitment and energy of our volunteers,” said Kathy Ratico, Director of the Cochrane Food Bank Society. “We want to ensure that when we come together to collect for those in need in our community, we’re able to give our best.”

The food bank is aiming high this year, with a goal of filling 20 pumpkin bins full of donated food. All items collected will go directly toward providing food hampers to local families in need.

Last fiscal year alone, the food bank distributed 9,604 hampers, representing more than $500,000 in food donations — a testament to the generosity of the Cochrane community.

This year’s collection drive is supported by signs around town, social media outreach, and newspaper announcements, encouraging residents to set out non-perishable items.

“We so appreciate the efforts of those who contribute and those who volunteer to help the food bank collect donations,” said Ratico. “Donations are essential to continue helping those in need in our community.”

The community response has already been strong, especially with the quick turnout for volunteers.

“We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has stepped up to volunteer for this weekend’s food drive,” said Ratico. “Your generosity and willingness to help make a real difference in our community.”

Safeway, No Frills, and Sobeys are also collecting donations for the food bank. Drop-offs are in the entrance of stores. Donations can also be dropped off at their warehouse at Bay 4, 30 Griffin Industrial Point, Cochrane, AB T4C 0A2.
