Cochrane Fire Services crews responded to a fire at The Community Food Co., located at 185 1 St E. last Wednesday morning, tying up downtown traffic for a few hours.

Fire Chief Shawn Polley said at the site that they received a 911 call reporting a structure fire just east of the downtown core.

“When crews arrived, they had light smoke conditions, coming from the ceiling inside the restaurant, and from the exterior, on the roof,” Polley said.

“So they laddered the building, went in and suppressed a small chimney fire.”

At lunchtime, crews were still doing mop-up work inside the restaurant.

Polley said the source of the fire is currently under investigation.

“There were no injuries, and a minor bit of loss,” he said. “Certainly more of an inconvenience for the property owner.”

Whenever a structure fire is reported, Cochrane Fire Services notifies Rocky View County Fire Services, just to ensure they have adequate response capability. The County’s crew helped out and was able to head home by noon.
