On Feb. 28, the colour pink will be blazing a common fashion statement around schools and the community in observance of Pink Shirt Day. The nationally recognized day highlights the stand against bullying.

Helping to equip local supporters, many retail stores have an inventory of pink products ready for the campaign.

The Pink Shirt Day campaign started in 2007 when a Nova Scotia student was bullied by other students for wearing a pink shirt to school. The next day, several students wore pink shirts to support the young student. The campaign swelled from there to a nationally-recognized day of support and awareness.

Hair to support you

While the day for raising awareness about bullying is associated with pink shirts, there are some people who like to splash a little colour into their day.  Local salons are ready for anyone wanting to “pink-up” their do.

Think Pink

Many Pink Shirt Day activities are planned in area schools and community groups.

According to the Pink Shirt Day official website, the day is particularly important for schools.

"We believe everyone - young and old - has the power to create change," the website's offfical statement reads. "This Pink Shirt Day, let’s do what we can to elevate the voices of all, and take a stand against bullying. We can show others that we advocate for kindness and inclusivity by wearing our Pink Shirt Day apparel. We encourage you to help spread awareness for this important cause not only in February, but throughout the entire year."

Pink Shirt Day will also be celebrated with a national show this year.

"Pink Shirt Day Canada is an interactive show designed just for schools. In this 40-minute Show, we’ll talk about being kind, hear from youth and award-wining authors, honour Indigenous people, hear from students about their own kindness projects, ask our special guest your questions, play a game with chances to win prizes, and leave you feeling like you’ve had a wonderful Pink Shirt Day."
