Parents looking out the window wondering what they’re going to do to keep rambunctious kids entertained during spring break need look no further than the Cochrane Public Library, which has once again dipped into their reservoir of creativity.
It’s "Spring Break Blast," and it covers all age groups and interests, and will even include cookies.
Program and Engagement Manager Carmen Erison had a hard time containing her enthusiasm as she described some of the activities scheduled from April 1 to 6.
“We’re excited to be able to provide programming every single day during spring break this year,” Erison said.
“And April 1st is the perfect day to eat your words,” she added with a laugh.
The afternoon of Monday April 1 will be Family Flicks Day, with Garfield The Movie taking centre stage.
It’s the 2004 version (rated PG) and people can bring snacks. One lucky viewer will take the movie home with them.
The next day features Cookie Books from 2 to 3 pm (children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult). This is sort of an introduction to Edible Books Day, which will be officially on April 6.
The International Edible Book Festival is an annual event usually held on or around April 1. The global event has been celebrated since 2000 in various parts of the world, where "edible books" are created, displayed, and small events are held. The creations are photographed and then consumed.
Drop-ins are welcome, but the library asks participants to help them plan by registering ahead of time for the Monday event.
Wednesday April 3, from 2 to 3:30 pm. The National Touring Museum will introduce dinosaur expert and amateur paleontologist Tim Jeffries to Alberta.
Jeffries has spent years lecturing to adults and children in Ontario, and is now located in the heart of dinosaur country.
In his newest lecture, entitled “Frozen in Time: Secrets of the Polar Dinosaurs,” he describes how dinosaurs survived in harsh conditions, and what the arctic was like in the Mesozoic Era. No registration is required for this talk.
April 4 from 2 to 4 pm is for people who like to build stuff.
It’s Library Makeshop day, when staff will be cleaning out the craft closet and filling the activity room with a wide variety of supplies, so builders can let their imaginations run wild – no rules, no registration required, and open to all ages. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
Friday April 5 is Putt and Play day.
From 2 to 6 pm the library will be converted into a miniature golf course, with a number of board games as well, including a few giant ones. Also open to all ages, and children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
Saturday, April 6 is Edible Book Day. Come and create the coolest edible book and join in the tasty competition as a part of the International Edible Book Festival. There are two categories – juvenile and family.
“What makes it perfect is creating together,” Erison said. “It’s a great way for families to learn and talk and be together and create something really fun.”
The SLS Centre has donated some prizes (like an Outdoor Boredom Busting Box and a picnic basket.)
