Nov. 7 is “Alberta Book Day” and the Book Publishers Association of Alberta (BPAA) is hoping Albertans appreciate their local book publishing industry and authors.
“Alberta’s community of publishers are essential to sharing Alberta’s Story locally and nationally, and investment in our sector is crucial to ensure that this continues, ” said Kieran Leblanc, Executive Director of the BPAA, speaking on the subject of Alberta Book Day.
To recognize the importance of the Alberta book publishing industry, Tanya Fir, minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women, declared the 6th annual “Alberta Book Day” at the legislature. The legislature also hosted a showcase of Alberta-published books and invited members of the BPAA to meet with MLAs.
“We are thrilled to have this opportunity for MLAs and their staff to see first-hand the quality books published in Alberta,” said Leblanc.
The book publishing industry in Alberta is an important part of the provincial economy and resonates throughout a variety of sectors, such as tourism, culture, health, and education.
With over 30 companies, Alberta book publishers create roughly 115 full-time jobs and nearly $7.5 million in wages and salaries, and contribute over $14 million annually to the provincial economy. They also contribute to our children's education by supplying high-quality, locally-produced resources for both teachers and students in Alberta.
