$6,000 fine for driving without insurance in Woodlands County

Woman clocked going 50 km/h over speed limit in Dunstable School zone netting big fine
Barrhead Provincial Court (VM)

BARRHEAD - A man caught driving without insurance on a highway in Woodlands County in early October 2022 received a hefty fine.

Eddy Elston Leake received a $6,000 fine from Justice Gregory Arnold Rice after he pleaded guilty to the offence at the Barrhead Court of Justice on July 9.

Traffic prosecutor R. Rees said the Crown was seeking an elevated fine as this was Leake's second such conviction.

Rice gave Leake until Feb. 14, 2025, to pay the fine; if he does not, he risks 60 days in jail.

Two people also pleaded guilty to going 50 km/h over the maximum speed limit and received fines of $495.

The first was Annie Hazel White.

"You have a heavy foot, hey," Rice stated.

White replied, "No, I was just at the wrong place at the wrong time".

Rees expanded on White's comments, saying she received the fine for speeding through the Dunstable School zone the day after the time had changed and did not know the school zone had gone into effect.

"The law is the law," Rice said, commending White for coming in and taking responsibility for her actions.

The second fine was given to Keri Ann Mesmer.

The Crown did not specify when or where the offence had taken place.
