Brand new schools to be built in Airdrie and Chestermere

The province announced the construction of 11 new schools, including a high school in Airdrie and K-9 in Chestermere.

Airdrie and Chestermere will be home to two brand new schools the provincial government announced on Saturday.

Demetrios Nicolaides, Minister of Education, said during a press conference that the Alberta government had pledged $8.6 billion for new schools and renovations  back in September as part of a School Construction Accelerator Program. Now, 11 are ready to move ahead with construction.

Airdrie will be home to a brand new 9-12 high school in the Southwinds neighbourhood, while Chestermere's Dawson’s Landing will welcome a new Kindergarten to Grade 9 facility.

The announcement was made at Genesis Centre Feature Gymnasium in Calgary where Rajan Sawhney, Minister of Advanced Education, and Patricia Bolger, board chair on the Calgary Board of Education, celebrated the announcement.

Fiona Gilbert, board chair of Rocky View Schools, was also in attendance, and said the district was deeply thankful to the province for the announcement.

"This will help relieve space pressures," Gilbert said."Projects like this are critical in two of our fastest growing cities and will no doubt improve the learning and growing environment."

Three new schools were additionally announced for Calgary's North East, including two in Redstone and one in Cornerstone, one in Okotoks, and five in Edmonton.
