This weekend could be tremendously appropriate, or how else can you explain the federal finance minister on our streets the same weekend as outhouses?
It’s the end of the penny drive which has been a huge success and there’s a good chance federal finance minister Jim Flaherty could be here for the deposit of more than 2,500 pounds of pennies.
All the proceeds go to the Right to Play program with Martin Parnell the visible guy in that great endeavour.
That goes Friday at noon and most of the action with be at ATB where the pennies will be delivered by horse and wagon and there’ll be a few surprises. Like maybe some desperados but other elements are in place if they dare show their face.
And a word about ATB. The penny drive organizers originally went to one of the big five banks and the Calgary office approved it — but head office in Toronto said not a chance.
So ATB was contacted and the reaction was immediate — you bet, said CEO Dave Mowatt, this is a great community event and we’re in and so the pennies will arrive Friday noon at ATB.
And, if everything goes according to plan, so will the federal finance minister to see the end of more than a ton of pennies.
Of course speaking of federal politicians it’s but a small step to outhouses.
They go Saturday morning on Main Street at 10 in front of the Heavenly Outhouse and are always great fun.
Again — like the pennies — another old guy may make an appearance.

And if pennies and outhouses are not enough culture for your weekend, there’s the annual Cochrane Culture Days downtown.
There’s everything from musicians to fancy cars to folk music to many varied artists, including some amazing photography, in the historic downtown streets.
This event goes both Saturday and Sunday, rain or shine.
So, there you have it for this weekend. Pennies from heaven, outhouses from Heavenly and photography from heavens knows where.
Speaking of heaven. What all in heaven’s name is going to be located in the former Domtar site? And why won’t anyone tell us?
