Dear Howard May,
Thank you for your article ("Rocky View elementary students not getting reading help they need") regarding children reading. There is no doubt that the children are not getting the help they need in order to learn to read at a very young age.
Who should the helpers be? This is the all important question. In yesteryear it was the parents at home. Even today, I know that many parents read to their children daily, and through reading to the children, they encourage the children on their journey of reading
I suggest that it is not only the school, but I suggest that the first and primary teacher of the child is the parent. It is not the taxpayer who should foot the bill in order for the child to read, it is the parents who should put aside their cellphones, put aside all the video games and the TV shows and sit and read and teach the child to read.
Again, I know many parents who do this, and this strategy is highly successful.
So parents, if your child cannot read at an early age, perhaps look in the mirror and you will see the best teacher for your child.
Thank you ...
