Dear Editor,
Well, this (environmental) task force is wonderful news! (Cover story June 13 edition of The Eagle) Not only will Cochrane be “committing to preserving our unique identity and to protecting, nurturing and enjoying our natural landscape” (Cochrane Strategic Plan) but will be going even further through “intentional planning and actions” to “identify and prioritize natural areas that should be preserved."
I am so excited to hear the Town’s commitment to “build(ing) community resilience and protect(ing) the visual beauty of our community” because surely destroying the last remaining natural pathway along Big Hill Creek in Glenbow is completely contradictory to all those grand statements. It’s certainly in direct opposition to the overwhelming majority of community residents who want the pathway left as is to “(preserve) our traditional history and passive recreational opportunities."
Each and every one of those quotes was from the front page article in the June 13 Eagle and each of them (plus many others in the article) are in direct opposition to the Town’s plan to cut down beautiful old trees and turn the natural path into a concrete speedway. Given everything the article supposedly stands for, it would be the height of hypocrisy for the Town to continue to ignore the community and move ahead to destroy such a loved place.
