WHL playoffs: Wetsch, Hurtig help Hitmen knock off Hurricanes 5-3

LETHBRIDGE — Carson Wetsch and Axel Hurtig each scored twice as the visiting Calgary Hitmen outlasted the Lethbridge Hurricanes 5-3 in Western Hockey League playoff action on Tuesday night.

David Adaszynski also scored for the Hitmen, who now trail the second-round, best-of-seven series 2-1.

Trae Johnson, Shane Smith and Caden Price scored for the Hurricanes, who outshot the visitors 29-23. Kash Andresen chipped in with two assists.

The teams were scoreless after the first period and the Hitmen led 2-1 after 40 minutes.

The Hitmen went 0-for-1 on the lone power play of the game.

Game 4 is Wednesday in Lethbridge.

WINTERHAWKS 3 SILVERTIPS 1

PORTLAND, Ore. — Ryan Miller and Diego Buttazzoni scored first-period goals and then the Portland Winterhawks held on to beat the visiting Everett Silvertips 3-1.

Carter Sotheran of the Winterhawks scored into an empty net with eight seconds left, netminder Ondrej Stebetak made 32 saves, and Portland now trails the second-round, best-of-seven series 2-1. Kyle Chyzowski chipped in with two assists.

Tarin Smith scored for the Silvertips, who outshot the hosts 33-31, including 13-6 in the third period.

The Winterhawks went 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Silvertips were 0-for-3.

Game 4 is Wednesday in Portland.
