It was the last stand for the Cannex Cochrane Generals, but after being unable to contain the Carstar Okotoks Bisons in overtime, the Generals saw their chances of winning another championship banner end in a stunning 5-6 loss on Mar. 1.
After breaking their two-game losing streak against the Bisons with a 4-2 win in Okotoks on Feb. 28, the Generals returned to the SLS Centre for packed crowed in Totem 1.
Straight out of the first period, the Generals held a healthy 2-0 lead. Things quickly shifted in the second after the Bisons made four quick points, while the Generals only managed to pull one point to end the period 3-4.
In a heated third period, the Bisons took the lead with an early point, but their lead dried up in an instant with two goals within two minutes of each other by the Generals, which saw the third period end 5-5.
The tension of overtime could be seen in both the crowd and players as the 10-minute clock saw several close calls. In a similar fashion to Game 1 of the series, with less than a minute on the clock, it appeared as through the game might head into a penalty shootout. But as time winded down, the Bisons struck the final nail in the Generals’ coffin by scoring a very late goal with only 52 seconds on the clock.
Following their defeat, the Generals ended the second round best-of-five series against the Bisons down 1-3. The Bisons will move on to the Southern Division finals where they will be facing off against the Medicine Hat Cubs.
