The Cochrane Cobras’ senior boys team are champions after besting the Chestermere Lakers at the Rocky View Sports Association divisional finals this past Saturday.
The Cobras beat the Lakers 74-68 during the championship game held at W.H. Croxford High School in Airdrie.
Head coach Patrick Court said the win resulted from a hard-fought match that saw the team competing without one of their best players, who was suspended from the game due to a technical foul in the game prior.
“We were down our leading scorer and a couple of other players... so we knew it was going to be a bit of a dogfight this weekend,” Court said. “It was a great team win and emotional for the guys knowing we could succeed if something happens to someone on the team.”
This divisional title is the latest win in a series of successes for the Cobras this year. The team has led the league throughout the season and has harnessed a momentum that Court says will help them in the upcoming zone tournament.
“It’s been a good run that we’ve been on. We were at a tournament in Strathmore [earlier in the season] and lost in the semi-finals … since then, we’ve been playing really good basketball,” Court said. “With the players that we have, it’s about letting them do what they do best on the court. I trust these guys that they’re going to make the right decisions on the floor.”
With the divisional title secured, the Cobras are looking towards zones to cement their winning streak. Nine teams are competing in zones, with the tournament's first game taking place March 7 in Olds. After that, the Cobras take on Springbank on Tuesday, March 8, at Cochrane High School.
