On May 2, 2013, Cochrane lost Linda (Lindsie) Gloria Haxton – mother, grandmother, educator, author, artist and musician. The Cochrane Activettes plan to honour her passion of lifelong learning, reading and literature with the establishment of an endowment fund to support the creation of the Lindsie Haxton Legacy Library Collection.
The collection encompasses a wide range of literary materials, both fictional and non-fictional. The choice to establish this particular collection reflects both Haxton’s passions and her desire to support growth and healing in individuals and families, her former husband, Terrance, wrote in a release. Eventually the collection aims to include music, DVDs, magazines and other media forms.
Lindsie’s focus in education was early childhood and she worked for many years teaching kindergarten, Grade 1 and special education. Terrance wrote, “Children flourished under her care because she believed in them and helped them to believe in themselves – who they were capable of being and what they were capable of achieving.”
Lindsie volunteered at the Association for the Rehabilitation of the Brain Injured Centre, or ARBI, in Calgary, where along with Terrance worked with individuals and families.
Along with her volunteer efforts, she co-authored the book The Hippo and the Unicorn – A Rainbow of Words. The story revolves around the correspondence between the eponymous animals through letters and poetry compiled in an anthology. The children’s novel “insightfully touched on the universal themes of friendship, hope and wonder, thereby rendering it accessible to both younger and more mature readers.”
The collection will be housed in the Family & Community Support Services’ Parent Link Centre in Cochrane.
In support of the project, additional funding will be pledged through private and corporate donations, family and others in the Cochrane area.
Donations can be made to the Town of Cochrane, clearly marked to be directed to the Parent Link Centre’s Lindsie Haxton Legacy Library Collection.
