A 51-year-old woman is dead as a result of a head-on collision that occurred south of Cochrane on Christmas Day.

According to the investigation on scene by Cochrane RCMP, the woman was travelling north on Highway 22 when the Pontiac Grand Am she was piloting wandered across the centerline and into the path of a southbound semi truck.

The woman was pronounced dead on scene. She was the lone occupant of the vehicle.

Currently, RCMP is waiting on toxicology results, as well as results from the medical examiner, said Cpl. Mel Calahasen.

The crash occurred a few kilometres south of the junction of Highway 22 and Highway 1. Both lanes of the highway were closed between 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Dec. 25.

The occupant of the semi truck was transported to hospital with what police said appeared to be minor injuries.

Calahasen stated that alcohol, weather and road conditions are not considered to be factors in the fatal collision.

A structure burned to the ground in Morley on Christmas Day.

The Stoney Nakoda First Nation fire department responded to the scene Dec. 25, where an old educational building was in flames.

As of press time, no information was available regarding the cause of the blaze.
