After significant recent storms in town this past weekend, several communities experienced some localized flooding.

Several posts on Facebook highlighted the flooding that occurred outside of homes and on the streets around Rivercrest, in particular.

Correspondence from the Town of Cochrane regarding the localized flooding outlined that certain homes are located near trap lows, which accumulate water after significant amount of rainstorms.

“For homes near trap lows, rainwater may accumulate on the road nearby, up to and sometimes including the driveway and a portion of the lawn,” it wrote. “This is normal for areas with a trap low. The water should completely drain within 24 hours once the rain stops.”

According to the Town’s public safety website, anyone that resides in low-lying areas should take the necessary steps to be flood ready. This includes moving valuables and documents out of basements.

The Town also advises to regularly check sump pumps and backflow valves for residents that have them, swales for debris or blockages, and clean all downspouts and ensure that they are pointed away from foundations.

A map with all the areas where trap lows can be located can be found on the Town's website.

In terms of the hail damage received during the recent storms, the Town said it did not possess specific details regarding individual reports of hail damage to local property owners.

For any concerns regarding localized flooding or localized flooding in town, the Town asks that they direct all inquiries to [email protected] or call 403-851-2590. The RancheHouse will respond on a priority basis.

For residents living in new communities, they are asked to contact their developer directly with any flooding concerns.

More information about flooding and proper procedures can be found online by visiting the Town of Cochrane website.

According to Environment Canada, thunderstorms are expected to possibly continue in the community until Thursday.
