Town seeks to reunite pets and owners more quickly

Cochrane dog and cat owners may have noticed an additional form mailed to them in December, along with their reminder to pay their animal licensing fees by end of January.

Cochrane dog and cat owners may have noticed an additional form mailed to them in December, along with their reminder to pay their animal licensing fees by end of January.

Municipal enforcement is encouraging Cochranites to fill out the authorization form and send it in, which will allow the town to post each dog owner’s first name, phone number and name and breed of their pet on cochrane.ca.

This way, lost Cochrane pet owners can be contacted simply by their furry friend’s finder checking out the website.

“The main thing is getting the pet back to the owner as quickly as possible,” said Charlene Ruttle, municipal enforcement officer with the town. “It’s being able to get pets home when we’re not on duty, as well.”

Ruttle said those filling out the form should remember to list the best phone number to be reached at.

“The forms went out with everybody’s (animal license) renewal bills,” said Ruttle, adding that staff is currently inputting all the data from the stack of forms received so far and that the information will be available on the town’s website in early January.

Bypassing the need to house furry friends at the town’s kennel will also save on town resources.
