The Town of Cochrane is considering an update to its animal bylaw that would, among several things, call for the licensing of cats.
The introduction of cat licensing is being proposed to help protect both the feline and its owner, as many cats found by the town do not get returned to their homes.
In 2012, 33 cats were impounded, with 11 being returned, while dogs, which require a licence, were sent home with much greater success — 70 out of 74.
Other adjustments to the animal bylaw include more options for peace officers when it comes to unattended animals, security from threatening behavior, nuisance animals and the ability to remove animals from off-leash areas should the animal’s behavior warrant such action.
The proposed cost of a cat licence would be $15 per year (dogs currently cost $30). If the measure is implemented, the town would offer the first year of cat licensing at no charge.
