COCHRANE— Students at St. Timothy High School have been shifted to temporary online learning after a request from the Calgary Catholic School District.
Alberta Education approved requests from Calgary Catholic and the Calgary Board of Education to shift Grades 7 to 12 to at-home learning on Wednesday (April 14). The move to online learning begins on Monday (April 19) and is expected to last for two weeks.
St. Timothy High School was included in the shift because it is a part of the Calgary Catholic School District.
The boards made these requests based on several factors including chronic substitute teacher shortages, high numbers of staff and students in quarantine or isolation and substantially high COVID-19 cases in communities.
The Alberta Government's COVID-19 school status map reported St. Timothy's had between two to four cases of COVID-19.
“We are seeing a sharp rise in cases among school-aged Albertans, as well as those in other age groups," said Alberta's Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw. "While this is an operational decision, I support it and ask that parents and students continue making safe choices to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Social activities outside of school can easily spread the virus, so please continue following all the health measures in place.”
More to come.
