St. Timothy High School students will have the opportunity to both perform and experience live performance arts during the school band’s trip to Vancouver from March 8 to 12, with the return of their annual out-of-province field trip.
Joana Dosdall, vice-principal of Cochrane’s Catholic junior-senior high school, said 27 students from various grades will be participating in the field trip and performing in Vancouver.
“The Vancouver band trip is for our senior high band and drama students,” Dosdall said, adding the senior band includes students in Grade 9 as well.
The students will leave for Vancouver on March 8 and will participate in several events during their time on the west coast, including a jazz festival and attending musical performances including Anastasia, and Sense and Sensibility, before returning to Cochrane on March 12.
“All students will be attending all of the events,” Dosdall said. “The band students in particular are performing at the festival, which includes an adjudication performance.
“We will also be attending the Vancouver Film School for part of the component to support the drama students, and while we are out there, we will be taking in a few musical and shows.”
This year, the students’ performances include a rendition of Harlem Nocturne and A Night in Tunisia. In addition to the performances and musicals, students will have the opportunity to watch a live performance by the Vancouver Symphony.
With a jam-packed schedule every day of the trip, which is fast-approaching, Dosdall said students’ excitement is mounting. Students are particularly excited considering this is the first year they’ve been able to go on the annual field trip since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic three years ago.
“I feel like it’s going to be fun to have this amazing opportunity,” said one of the students who will be attending the B.C. trip. “I’m excited [that] this is our first trip in a long time, considering COVID and everything.”
Dosdall said that the provincial field trip is a wonderful experience for students, and thanks Mr. McGregor for his work as their band and drama teacher.
“Mr. McGregor does an excellent job in preparing students for performance,” Dosdall said. “We have multiple performance nights and performances throughout the school year, so the students are prepared for performing in front of others.
“He does an amazing job planning the out-of-province field trips for our students.”
