Can you say you’ve been to a 134th birthday? The Cochrane Ranche Historic site will celebrate 134 years and the public is invited to attend the Aug. 1 event as part of Ranche Days.
New to Ranche Days this year is a horseshoe throwing demonstration, pond life exploration, an art show and the Davies Hospital Museum.
The pond life exploration is an opportunity for children to learn about the plants and animals that call the creek home.
The art show will run from 1 to 3 p.m. and features the paintings of historic barns and buildings done by Helen Erickson. The new museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
There will be a number of historical activities, such as log sawing in the corrals and wagon rides through the site from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Cochrane Farmer’s Market will be open for extended hours, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will also be entertainment on the stage beginning at 11 a.m.
The Cochrane Ranche was the first large lease (100,000 acres) granted in Western Canada. “The Ranche is a large part of Cochrane’s history and Western culture, which deserves to be celebrated by all Cochrane residents on Heritage Day,” said Jana Wilson, with the Stockmen’s Library.
