Captain Johnny Mo is the new commanding officer of the 2512 King's Own Calgary Regiment Cadet Corps.
The change of command occurred Dec. 4 at Cochrane's Royal Canadian Legion, as Mo replaced Captain Shaun Simpson, who had held the title for the past three years.
"I was waiting for it," said Mo with a laugh. "I'm psyched and really gung-ho to get started on my ideas."
Mo is certainly not short on goals to work towards during his three-year term as leader of the corps, he has big aspirations to both grow the local cadet program, as well as increasing the activity level and bettering the personal development of the youth involved.
At the top of Mo's to-do list: a trip to Europe in June 2014.
"It's the 70th anniversary of D-Day and we don't want the cadets to just read about it in history books," he said of the adventure to Normandy, France. "So, we're going to go to Europe to see it for ourselves.
"We're going to walk on the fields and beaches - you can't get that experience in a textbook."
Mo, who has a military background, first became involved with the local cadet organization in 2007.
Before the change in command, he was the group's administrative officer.
The Cochrane corps currently has 24 cadets, but Mo said he hopes to grow the group to 40 during his cycle as commanding officer.
While Mo is pleased with his recent appointment, he's quick to praise his fellow officers at the corps.
"It's not about one person," he said, "all of us work together as a team."
