The Cochrane Public Library is celebrating its 75th anniversary year along with a Narnia-themed event coinciding with Family Literacy Day on Jan. 25.

“As we began planning the event for our 75th anniversary year, we stumbled upon an interesting fact: 2025 also marks the 75th anniversary of the C.S. Lewis classic, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,” said the library’s Program and Engagement Manager Carmen Erison.

“It sparked an idea – why not transform our library for one day into the enchanting world of Narnia? 75 Years of Library Magic was born. It's a chance to rediscover the magic of this classic story and share it with a new generation.”

The creative staff at the Cochrane Library feel there is no better way to celebrate Family Literacy Day than with a journey to Narnia.

“We're bringing the pages of this classic tale to life with interactive activities, storytelling, and a whole lot of fun for all ages,” Erison said.

Storyteller Betty Hersberger has been invited to the library for this event. Hersberger has more than 40 years of storytelling experience coming from folktales, folklore, and family.

“I can’t wait to watch her perform. Her performance will kick off the event at 1 pm,” Erison said.

After the storyteller’s performance, families will have the chance to experience Narnia for themselves, with fun activities inspired by the books.

Erison said the importance of promoting literacy – especially in children – cannot be overstated.

“Honestly, literacy is the key to unlocking a world of imagination and possibility. By bringing Narnia to life, we’re showing how reading can transport you to magical places, in turn inspiring a lifelong love of learning.”

The library’s festivities are free, but they ask those planning on attending to pre-register on the website: cochranepubliclibrary.ca.

Family Literacy Day was created in 1999 to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. Taking time every day to read or do a learning activity with children is crucial to a child’s development, improving a child’s literacy skills dramatically, and can help a parent improve their skills as well.
