Cochrane area kids who’ve ever dreamt of becoming a librarian can indulge that fantasy over the next few months at the Cochrane Public Library, through the Kid Librarian Contest.
Staff at the library are inviting kids between the ages of six to 12 to be a part of a special celebration as a Kid Librarian.
Kids with a passion for reading and a love for the library, and those who dream of sharing their favourite stories with others will have the chance to make a difference and help commemorate the library’s 75th-anniversary.
Kid Librarians will have the opportunity to: be a star (feature in library videos and social media posts); help others (assist with library programs and events) and inspire readers (share book recommendations and reading tips).
They also will be eligible to win some prizes, as recognition for their contributions.
Program and Engagement Manager Carmen Erison said the contest has special meaning for her.
“I know as a kid I loved the library," Erison said. "These kids get to be our library ambassador for a month. They get to be a star."
Contest runs until November 15, and is open to all Cochrane Public Library cardholders.
Participants must have a valid library card at the time of entry and throughout their term as Kid Librarian (if selected). Library staff and their immediate families are not eligible to participate.
To enter, participants must submit an entry explaining why they want to be the Kid Librarian. This can be in the form of a short, written paragraph (approximately 100 words) or a short video (no longer than 5 minutes).
Entries should include: why the participant loves the library; their favourite books or genres; what they would do as Kid Librarian.
The library encourages applicants to get creative and let their passion shine.
Proposals can be submitted in person at the library or via email: [email protected].
All entries must include the participant's name, age, and contact information (phone number or email address), and permission waiver, to be considered.
The Kid Librarian will serve as a library ambassador for one month. With support from Cochrane Public Library staff, the Kid Librarian will film short videos promoting the library, its services, and programs (max. 1 hour).
Examples of videos may include: interviewing library staff; unboxing new children's books; showcasing collections; interacting with library patrons; participating in a library event or program, and, creating book recommendations.
Each monthly Kid Librarian will receive a prize package that will include: a $50 Gift Card to Great Things in Store, a Kid Librarian Badge, a Kid Librarian T-shirt, and choice of one Juvenile or Children's book to be added to collection with name plate recognizing Kid Librarian Selection.
Selection must fall within the Cochrane Public Library's collection policy as outlined in section 3.1.1.4 of the CPL Board Policy manual. Policy available upon request.
