Father Rick Bergh of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church is extending an open invitation to all Cochrane and area Christians to take part in Cochrane’s annual Walk of the Cross celebration this Friday.

Those driving down Cochrane hill on March 29 at 10 a.m. won’t be able to help but notice several hundred parishioners from some 12 local Christian churches congregated in the open space at the bottom of the hill, along the south side of Highway 1A.

“Last year, there were around 400 people, so it’s a big event for Cochrane,” explained Bergh, adding that this is the 26th year for the annual celebration.

“This is one of the events that members from the all Cochrane Christian churches come together to participate in.”

The event is organized through the Cochrane Ministerial Association, of which Bergh is an executive member.

Beginning at 10 a.m., the procession will make its way along Main Street, stopping at some 12 stations along the way for Biblical readings, accompanied by Christian hymns. The destination is the Cenotaph, outside of the Cochrane Legion, where the ceremony will be wrapped up.

“(That is) where we erect the cross, draped in black and share a few words before we part ways,” said Bergh, who is encouraging families to bring their small children out to share in the annual celebration.
